Red Hot Design

Long, fire-red hair and affinity for motorcycles reflect Shasta Smith’s unique persona, which stands out in her work. An interior designer, Smith specializes in repurposing scrap metal for clients seeking unconventional architectural elements. At her shop, The Vintage Monkey, in Sacramento, Calif., designs go from scrap yard to sketch to showroom with the efforts of a talented crew: sculptor Thomas Ramey, her dreadlock-sporting right-hand man; metal fabricator Alex English, the go-to guy for vehicle-related projects; welder Tony Bures, who can build just about anything from piles of iron, aluminum and stainless steel; and draftsman Jason Chernowetz, project manager and the group’s “brainiac.” Hourlong “Red Hot Design” episodes show Vintage Monkey’s creativity in action.
